An hour and a half from the ferry port of Calais, clifftop Ault is a real breath of fresh air and the place to come to enjoy to some of the most glorious views along the entire French coast of the English Channel. Travelling in this part of the Somme Bay in the 1830s and 1840s, writer Victor Hugo described how he could not take his eyes away from the chalk cliffs of this ‘Alabaster Coast’ stretching from here into Normandy. Staying in the cosy 4 star hotel La Villa Aultia, you’ll be reminded of the writer’s visits to Ault – not least in the elegant 1837 Victor Hugo restaurant and the literary lounge-bar. The hotel’s richly decorated 15 rooms and suites have a similar Golden Age/Belle Epoque feel, as well as modern luxuries including whirlpool tubs. On summer nights a sleek terrace allows for romantic candlelit dining.
