Roulotte holidays in France: a family haven for nature lovers

Whether you are heading to the south or coming back towards Calais, take advantage of every moment with the family and stay in a fun French gypsy caravan (roulotte) two hours from Calais on the A26. They have thought of everything for weary travellers; from the welcome drink and the amazing dinner to the picnic lunch for the next day’s driving.

You’ll love:

- The walks in the surrounding countryside (by bike, canoe…)

- The on-site dinner available (in your gypsy caravan or in the Finnish kota-grill cabin)

- The bikes available for hire

Each roulotte has a view directly over its little ‘private’ part of the river. Here, there is a real connection with nature. Kids will love running from one island to another, over little bridges, feeding the ducks and exploring the forest. Parents will love the pure tranquility, being surrounded by trees and just sitting on the picnic table at the front of the roulotte watching the river flow past.

You will be happy to know that you don’t have to worry about dinner tonight. Nicole has everything organised! The famous cookware Le Creuset is based nearby, (which you can visit and pick up a bargain if you have the room in the car) and your dinner will be cooked in one of its finest. La Cocotte de l’Omignon is known far and wide. Slow cooked chicken and veg cooking in cider, served with bread, local cheese, a traditional sweet tart and drinks (please order in advance €60 for 4 people).

If you have time on your hands, the experience is worth at least two or three nights. There are lots of local sights to see, even the village itself has a story worth uncovering. There is evidence of a 2000 year old Gallo-Roman oppidum (fortified settlement) and of more recent times, the area was significantly impacted by the First World War, so there are many memorials and museums to discover. The village of Saint Quentin has Art Deco architecture, and a very pretty center square. You can find many good restaurants in town.
