Leave time to explore the extraordinary castle parklands with their theatrical French-style gardens created for Louis II by Versailles designer André Le Nôtre. Also yours to discover on this vast estate are English-style gardens, woodlands, beehives and a ‘hamlet’ (Hameau) of half-timbered cottages, one of which is home to a cosy restaurant where you can feast on desserts accompanied by authentic Chantilly cream.

You could also explore the castle domain on a local breed of horse, the sturdy Henson raised in the Baie de Somme, during a ride with the Espace Equestre Henson Chantilly.

A few steps away from the castle, beside the town’s famous racecourse, the historic Grand Stables are now home to the fascinating Musée du Cheval, where displays trace the history of horses through human civilisation. The venue also hosts magnificent equestrian shows beneath its atmospheric 30-metre dome.

Round off your sightseeing with memorable meals and luxurious accommodation. The Auberge du Jeu de Paume offers Michelin-starred dining overlooking the castle estate, or there are further gourmet delights in store at the Château Hotel Mont Royal and the Château de Montvillargenne in adjoining Gouvieux. Or the town centre is full of charming bistros and crêperies serving regional dishes based on fresh local produce.
