Though it’s the kind of place you can (blissfully) hear a pin drop, it’s also only 20 minutes’ drive from Montreuil-sur-Mer, a little more bustling on account of cobbled streets, markets, boutiques and an impossible number of gastronomic restaurants.

In a world that can sometimes feel hard to navigate, we need to take active steps to look after ourselves, press pause on life, and keep an eye on the wellbeing of the planet as much as on our own. Well, all comers to boutique guesthouse ‘Domaine de Fresnoy’ in Loison-sur-Créquoise can’t fail to do just that since it’s tucked away in a private forest with its guests waking to the murmur of rustling trees and birdsong. If we were to predict your thoughts, we think you’ll find it hard to believe that all this is only 52 miles from Calais, just over the Channel.

What’s clever about this characterful former staging post dating from the 13th century is that moving from the outside to the inside feels seamless, not just thanks to owner Florence’s eco-responsible approach to hospitality, but in the natural décor of your suite for the night. Aptly named the 'Cocoon' suite, expect 53m² of gorgeous space, all decorated in the calming, muted tones of soft white, blue and beige. You can also look forward to a king-size bed; beautiful waxed concrete flooring; top-quality linen bedding; organic fleur-de-tilleul toiletries; a seating area with sofa and armchairs; and the pièce de resistance… huge doors opening out onto wraparound nature.

Over breakfast (locally sourced and organic) there's a whole host of things to do. Make the most of Domaine de Fresnoy’s proximity to the trees by gently rocking in a swing seat outside? Focus on nothing but silence and the chance to recharge the tired batteries in an exceptional natural setting of over 4 hectares or seek out the quiet little corner under the walnut tree - (perfect for hiding with a book!) listed as one of the "Remarkable Tree" (They are only 1000 in France!)? Maybe explore the valley’s rivers and forests (undisputedly the very best way to wave goodbye to any stresses and strains!). You could also seek out some local life in the nearby towns of Montreuil-sur-Mer and Hesdin, both microcosms of all we hold dear about France – historical cobbled streets, great restaurants, markets, boulangeries and more. Within 40 minutes by car you’ll also find the beach resort of Le Touquet in one direction and the historic site of Agincourt in the other. All subject to whether you can prize yourself away from the Cocoon suite, that is!

Locally sourced breakfast

Breakfast is served between 8am and 10:30am in the B&B's dining room or in its garden if the weather permits. Breakfast includes hot drinks, baguette, homemade brioche, seasonal fruits, fruit juice, homemade yoghurts and butter. The local, organic jam is one that's served in Paris' palaces, no less!

The Cocoon suite

The Cocoon suite consists of single-storey accommodation measuring approximately 53m². Its large bedroom contains a king-size bed (bedding included), bathroom with shower and bath, and beautiful sitting room with sofa and armchairs. A second bedroom contains 2 single beds. Also included in the suite: television, wifi, organic Floraluxe toiletries, and a portable lamp for guests who wish to go outside in the moonlight!

The suite at Domaine de Fresnoy will be ready at 5pm. For arrivals any later, please just let the owners know in advance. Check-out the next day is any time before 11am

An aperitif platter is included for guests staying 2 nights or longer. It includes seasonal appetisers and a half bottle of 'Perlé de Groseilles', a delicious redcurrant aperitif produced in the same village

Enjoy dinner or lunch in your suite

Your stay at Domaine de Fresnoy offers you many dine-in options. If you're planning to arrive a little late, or you just want to settle into your suite as quickly as possible without the hassle of having to think about food, why not ask the owner in advance about ordering up a hamper delivery for dinner? They're prepared by local cafe 'L’Encas et L’Echoppe', using local and seasonal produce. Or, if you'd rather treat yourself to a gourmet meal, you can order in the services of a private chef. Lastly, there's a large, fully equipped kitchen (with a central island, plus large indoor and outdoor tables) if you'd rather do your own cooking. A vegetarian, organic and local meal is available on reservation (36 hours before arrival) for 28 euros / person excluding drinks.
