A Hobbit-style woodland family-lodge on Pierrefonds campsite

If you like the outdoorsy feeling of family camping in France but you can’t be doing with the stressful packing and setting up, spending a night in a cosy, comfortable and characterful glamping-style lodge has got your name written all over it. Near magical Pierrefonds castle in the Hauts de France region, the delightfully unusual cottage named ‘Cachette de Frodon’ is on a campsite in Pierrefonds right on the edge of Compiègne forest just 1 hour from Paris or 2 hrs 30 mins from Calais. Just like stepping into a Hobbit house in the world of Tolkien, it’s completely made of wood and built into the side of a small earthen mound.

From the moment the children spot the cute cottage at Coeur-de-la-Forêt campsite in Pierrefonds - all round windows and grassy roof like a Lord of the Rings scene - their digital devices will be the last things on their minds. The owner Christophe actually built the unusual cottage himself with plenty of characterful and practical little features in mind to make guests smile. Every detail has been thought of: a walk in shower, curtained bedroom cubicles, a well-equipped kitchen, and lounge area with chimney – all in a bright and fresh décor. One of the most special features is the tree trunk that runs right up through the middle of the room; like bringing the outside inside, it supports the roof and making a unique focal point when you sit down to eat en famille.

Talking of trees,you might be interested to hear that there are no less than 35,000 acres of forest right on the cottage’s doorstep, plus dozens of kilometres of trails for you to follow on family cycle rides (hire bikes on the campsite!) and a safe treetop adventure playground called “Grimp à l’Arb” where you can whizz on zipwires from tree to tree. For less adrenaline-inducing things to do there’s the picture-postcard village of Saint-Jean-aux-Bois, and of course Chateau de Pierrefonds - a fairytale castle to ignite the children’s imaginations with dungeons, drawbridge and an enigmatic crypt.

One thing’s for sure… with all this fresh air and excitement on board the kids will be out for the count the moment their heads hit the pillow tonight! All the more reason to savour some peaceful grown-up time with a glass or two on the terrace before bed!
