I spent all my childhood in Laon so I know it inside out. Let me guide you through the narrow mediaeval streets and the romantic areas of my town!

My insider tips

Romantic picnic at Vauclair Abbey

Meet up at Bouconville-Vauclair for a romantic picnic at the foot of the ruins of a magnificent Cistercian abbey situated on the edge of the Vauclair woods. You can then walk hand in hand through its garden of medicinal plants. I can stay for hours just strolling through the garden, ambling along its aisles, listening to the birds sing and letting myself be carried away by the smell of the flowers…

A bike ride on the Ailette greenway

Setting off from Vauclair Abbey, follow a 18 km waymarked path designed to let you discover one of the region’s most outstanding areas in the heart of undulating landscapes. This is undoubtedly one of the finest sites in the area: The Vauclair National Forest and its abbey, the “Maison de la Nature et de l’Oiseau”, Ailette Lake. And, the must of musts, Monampteuil Lake, specially developed for swimming, flanked by a large playground: you couldn’t find a better place for children!

My personal favourite: You can hire bikes for the whole family at the Ailette Lake Cycle Centre!

Tip taken from :

I absolutely love walking in the upper part of the town: if you climb up the “l’escalier du panorama” stairs, hand-in-hand, from the “porte fortifiée des Chenizelles” (fortified gateway) or walk along the paths called “grimpettes”, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views. The old town is full of surprises such as the “cuve Saint-Vincent”, a tiny part of the countryside in the town: vines were grown there up to the 19th century! Even now, I’m still surprised by the striking size of Laon Cathedral: it’s a viewpoint enabling you to see the whole town. The magic feel isn’t just limited to the exterior: inside there are splendid Gothic architectural elements basking in the glory of truly stunning light.
