My insider tips

Birdwatching with the tides

Whether during stormy weather or calm, it is always incredible to watch the Somme Bay and the Authie Bay be recovered by the incoming tides. The best spots to appreciate these magic moments of nature is at the Point du Hordel  where the water comes right up to your feet, or the Chapelle des marines at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme to have a panoramic view.
Thousands of little wading birds come to rest in the meadows and on the sand banks while the tides are high. The Somme Bay, progressively covered with water for 6 hours, no longer offers the shorebirds their mudflats for feeding, so they wait patiently on the shore preening and resting.

Get out your binoculars because with a little luck, you can spot a species not seen in England the Kentish Plover !
