Butterworth Farm is built on the site of the my family farm, where I passed all of my childhood. This farm is also where my grandparents witnessed the arrival of the German troops in 1914. Having left Pozières when I was 17, I returned in 2000, with my wife Marie, and together we have rediscovered the memories hidden within this village, which was completely destroyed in the Battle of the Somme.

We built this cottage to welcome visitors from all over the world who wish to visit the Remembrance Trail.

History would reveal that no more than 300m from our cottage, an English officer, George Butterworth, was killed, it seems, by a German sniper. Unable to be found, his body will rest here forever. The memory of George will never be forgotten, it is forever present in our daily lives and in our home.

Marie, whose mother was a decorator has put all her savoir-faire into the property.

Welcoming tourists, often from the other side of the world, has become our raison d’être. It is a shared passion which gives us rich communication, friendship and much emotion.

We feel that it is very important to remember the young people who came to fight and who gave their lives for the freedom of others. We become more and more involved each time we meet a new family, researching their ancestors. We love hearing their stories and we are often very moved. We do all we can to help them in their search, whilst providing a comfortable place to return to after a day on the battlefields.
It feel it is important to exchange and share with our guests what has become their memory, as united nations, a large family, that of humanity and remembrance.
