It’s high time for a weekend to yourselves. The Château de Breuil is the perfect choice –a 16th-century manor with super-romantic decor, a designer suite nestled away in the eaves, a candlelit restaurant listed in the Michelin guide and a heated indoor pool. It is situated just five minutes from the medieval city of Laon with its wonderful sights for couples to discover together, including a magnificent cathedral and illuminated ramparts.

At the foot of this hilltop city you’ll find Bruyères-et-Montbérault, along a little street lined by fields and woods. Turn right, head through the vast iron gates and follow the driveway through the parklands… You’ll be surprised and delighted by what you find.

Welcome to the Château de Breuil, an imposing manor house with turrets and a crenellated keep, built in 1568 and restored by the writer Arsène Housset, a friend of Zola. Your suite is right at the top, in the eaves, with your bathroom occupying one the castle’s turrets!

In the evening, having settled into your suite with its cosy designer sitting room, you don’t have to go far to eat. The château’s owner, Stéphanie, is a fabulous cook, and her restaurant is listed in the Michelin guide. What a treat you’re in for as descend the majestic staircase and pass beneath the tasselled chandeliers to find your dinner table in its setting of contemporary decor.

Fish broth with fillet of sea bream and curry foam; a French onglet steak cooked at a low temperature with butternut squash and a peanut sauce; a platter of fine cheeses; clementine and praline, a new take on a Kinder Bueno ice cream. Everything looks like it’s come straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine!

Return to your suite, where gentle music plays in the bathroom and the large tub is surrounded by lighted candles. Slip into 38° bubbling water in your turret-for-two and savour the moment…

In the morning, you can take breakfast in your suite if the mood takes you – the room service is fit for a king (and queen)! Then take a dip in the heated indoor pool, before making your leisurely way to wonderful local sights including the Abbaye de Vauclair for a dose of serenity and contemplation, the vast Lac de l’Ailette for a blast of fresh air, and of course Laon (it’s just 4km away). Climb to the top of this ‘Montagne Couronnée’ (‘crowned mountain’), stroll its alleyways, discover the shops nestled away between its ramparts and sip a mojito on a café terrace overlooking one of the world’s most elevated cathedrals.
