Located in Quend-Plage, between the Baie de Somme and the Baie d’Authie, the Domaine de Diane is an upscale, five-star open-air hotel of villas, cottages and mobile homes. The reception building, in an old hunting inn called Le Chalet de Diane, sets the tone. Resembling a seaside villa, it recalls the Belle Epoque and outdoorsy ways of life.

It’s here, amidst trendy, individual decor, that you’ll escape the world together: in a Safari room with blueish tones, oak flooring and Afro-industrial inspiration, perhaps, or in the Rose Bateau room with its pastel hues. A few steps along the boardwalk from your room you’ll pass a lush pond full of Koï carp before disappearing into the extensive spa. Here you’ll have, all to yourselves, a bubbling hydrotherapy hot tub with French windows opening onto nature – relieving stress and soothing away any aches and pains – a hammam and a detoxifying sauna. Your serotonin levels will thank you and you’ll sleep like a baby.

With all stress washed away, jump on one of the Domaine’s bikes and take the cycle path from right in front of the property to reach the seaside in just five minutes. Stretch out on the fine sand and breathe in the sea air – the most natural of remedies for anxiety. The Marquenterre bird reserve is within cycling distance, too; take the Tadorne circuit, making sure to stop off at the Henson equestrian centre to see hundreds of this local breed in the pastures, and keeping watch for storks and egrets. When you want a bit of fun, face the wind and the sea spray as you try out sand-yachting, laughing as loudly as you like – this beach is enormous!

Returning to the Domaine de Diane, sink onto a lounger beside the hotel’s private pool and sip an apéritif as you dangle your feet in the water. At dinner time, the Domaine’s brasserie offers a menu of fresh local produce in dishes such as ficelle picarde (a savoury crêpe with ham, mushrooms and cheese) and bouchot-grown mussels (from Quend itself). Before sinking into the arms of Morpheus, take a stroll around the Domain’s own several dozen Marquenterre-like hectares, with pine trees, birches, ponds and dunes and their population of squirrels and birds. There’s space for everyone, it’s so vast. Serenity is here for the taking…

Stopover and visit the Jardin de Valloires

Stop off on route at the Jardins de Valloires which is close to the A16, just an hour from Calais. The stunning gardens are well worth stopping for, with their rosary which housed the Rose of Picardy (created by David Austin after the romantic war time ballad The Roses are Blooming in Picardy). There is also a huge range of decorative plants, flower filled avenues with stunning views, orchards etc etc. The restaurant is a must, with the chef creating a new menu every days based on whats available in the gardens!
