One of the world’s loveliest bays is a wonderful place for outdoors activities for children, with family-friendly cycle paths that make it ideal for active family holidays in France just a short hop from Calais.
Bikes are a great way to discover the Somme Bay, a 17,200-hectare area of land and sea designated a Grand Site de France in 2011 for its sustainable development. This is especially true for families looking to do activities together and spend time in wild nature: the bay features 46km of cycle paths, many specially designed for families. The healthy, oxygen-rich air will help you all recharge your batteries and detox your system.
A family cycle route in the Somme Bay: the Tour de la Baie
The landscapes and animals of the Somme Bay
By pedal power alone, you’ll encounter a multitude of landscapes – marshes, dunes and pebbles – and a wealth of wildlife. This is great place to interest kids in birdwatching, and they’ll also love seeing Henson horses, a docile local breed perfect for family horse-rides. Best of all are the seals out on the sandbanks – you can see the largest colony west of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, from the Pointe du Hourdel or Cap Hornu.
Scenic villages and fishermen’s districts
and ancient fishing ports including Le Crotoy with its fine-sand beach and calm sea perfect for family fun. Don’t miss the views from the heights of Saint-Valery’s cobbled old town; the bay is so vast you can barely make out the sheep on the saltwater marshes. Behind the town’s port, Courtgain is a traditional fishermen’s district on the hillside, with a warren of alleys with closely packed, colourful houses like something out of an Impressionist canvas.
Pippa Darbyshire: a British expat who fell under the spell of the Bay
Stop off too at Noyelles-sur-Mer, where Brit Pippa Darbyshire has opened the Relais de la Baie café–gallery displaying her canvasses inspired by the bay’s changing colours. This mesmerising landscape has inspired many other artists, including another British painter, Alan Johnston.
Having fun with kids
When you’ve completed the family cycle route in the Somme Bay: the Tour de la Baie circuit, impress the kids by loading your bikes (for free) on a real steam train that runs between Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Cayeux sur mer. Watch as the train is readied for the journey – coal thrown onto the fire, steam shooting from the valves and the whistle blown…
