In this region characterised by sleepy villages, age-old cottages and little country roads, legend says that in 1916, a resting British soldier encountered a girl tending roses in a quiet Somme village. Finding the poignant scene to be in complete contrast with the suffering on the Front, he wrote the poem ‘Roses of Picardy’ and in turn, UK rose specialist David Austin was inspired by the simple story to create the rose of the same name. You’ll find this unique beauty ‒ a simple rose of pink-red petals adorning a delicate stem – in the rose garden here at Abbaye de Valloires.

Not surprisingly, the abbey is one of France’s most precious listed ‘Monuments Historiques’ and it’s easy to see why when you visit its chapterhouse, cloisters, salon, vestry and church, with fascinating stories and anecdotes bringing it to life. - Hygiene standards are strictly adhered to throughout, with particular attention paid to areas where contact is deemed to be frequent

- Bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms will be cleaned to the highest hygiene standards

- Bedding and towelling will be washed and sanitised at high temperatures according to official sector guidelines

- Antibacterial hand-gel available
