The French vineyard stay where champagne and romance sparkle

‘Chambres d’hôtes’ says the beautiful wrought-iron sign hanging up outside the doors of the Porte d’Arcy on the champagne trail between Paris and Reims. Translating in English as ‘B&B’, you’re more likely to leave this place having experienced the standard of a luxury hotel, or better still for owner Caroline’s personal touches. With all the essential ingredients for a relaxing romantic weekend break in France, La Porte d’Arcy also has much to visit on the doorstep: a private forest (yep, it’s just for guests), visits to vineyards and champagne cellars, and poignant WW1 memorials like the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery.

Transformed from a farmhouse to a heavenly romantic weekend hideaway, Caroline and Jean-François offer a choice of three suites: ‘Le Chêne’, ‘La Champagne’ and ‘Les Bruyères’ – the latter with a romantic four-poster. Also included in your French weekend break package is a relaxing massage each, a half bottle of perfectly cooled champagne (produced on the vineyard of Caroline’s own family, no less) and a visit to a local champagne cellar.

Helped along by the pool, the sun-loungers and the tennis court, the two of you can just totally relax into your weekend break safe in the knowledge that Caroline will take care of everything for you. For starters, there’s an excellent French breakfast to take your time over, with crêpes, yoghurt, farmhouse eggs, freshly squeezed orange juice and a delicious orchard-fruits compote. With wafts from the kitchen, we’re guessing that here at B&B La Porte d’Arcy, it won’t be nearly so hard to get out of bed as it is at home!

Born into a family of champagne producers, Caroline knows the vineyards around here like the back of her hand and will point you in the right direction for champagne cellar visits and vineyards in the area. She’ll also tell you where the best walking routes are close to B&B La Porte d’Arcy so you can recharge your batteries and renew romance taking in the beautiful vineyard landscapes. You might prefer to immerse yourselves in the forest instead, just at the edge of the grounds. Bar the odd squirrel, you won’t meet another soul!

Nearby are some of Northern France’s most inspiring sights to see: there’s the romantic ruins of the Château de Fère, a walk around ‘Hottée du Diable’ known for its unusual and mystical rock formations, or a stroll around the chateau walls in nearby Château-Thierry with far-reaching views over the Marne river below.

Of course, no romantic weekend break is complete without dinner. Caroline can recommend great gastro-restaurants within easy reach of B&B La Porte d’Arcy or, if you fancy reserving in advance to dine in, stay put to enjoy the sweet nectar of local vineyards followed by Caroline’s sumptuous take on Northern France cuisine. Stock up in the Champagne region

If you are stopping over close to Champagne on the way to or from your ski trip, its a great idea to stopover a bit longer and fill up the boot with some bubbles. You can head into the larger towns like Reims or Epernay where yu will find the bigger Champagne houses, or why not hunt out a few bargains from the lesser known, but equally delicious, smaller houses?  “Maison Lévêque-Dehan”, a family of winegrowers for five generations. Mr Lévêque-Dehan will take great pleasure in showing you round the vineyard, adapting the visit to your wishes. Two fabulous features: discovering the different varieties of grape and his delightful little museum. What’s more he’s a genuinely warm and friendly gentleman.
