Calais accommodation for a weekend of shopping French-style!

We don’t know about you but when it comes to weekends away, we don’t always want to lounge about doing next to nothing; sometimes we want a romantic weekend break that crams in as much as possible ‒ life’s unpredictable, and every moment counts, right? Well, if that’s you, and you like the sound of sneaking in a heavy dose of French-style retail therapy too, why not make the short and easy Channel crossing to Northern France to indulge in a Calais 3-dimensional shopping experience? There’s (1) a whole host of niche and independent boutiques in the town centre (2) a classic French market or two (3) and a humongous French shopping mall for bottle bargains and a whole lot more besides. Even better, your Calais accommodation (with your very own sauna ‒ and complimentary champers too!) ‒ the ‘Cercle de Malines’‒ is a luxury yet inexpensive B&B in the old lacemaking quarter, with a lovely owner who’ll share her local knowledge to help you make the most of your one-night break in Calais.

Let’s talk shops. You’re bound to want to go to CITÉ EUROPE, the super-mall right next to the Eurotunnel crossing terminal (a massive Carrefour supermarket, 120 additional shops and 15 restaurants!) but whatever you do, don’t leave it at that, because Calais is more than just your average booze cruise with interesting INDEPENDENT BOUTIQUES in the town centre complementing the shopping experience. Make the boutique gift shop at ‘Cité de la Dentelle et de la Mode’ (Calais’ state of the art cultural centre dedicated to lace and fashion) your first port of call for take home trinkety gifts like jewellery, fans, keyrings, towels and card, all made with the same lace the Duchess of Cambridge chose for her wedding dress! And do linger longer at the stunning museum if you’ve an interest in either haute couture fashion design or Northern France’s social history, before diving into some of the specialist foodie stores in town to stock up on French take-home goodies like beers, wines, patisserie and mountains of French cheese (if you can put up with pungent wafts on the car journey home, that is!).

And, for anyone who thought Calais was just a town of post-war modernist architecture, read on… Calais town centre is actually a real eye-opener: if you visit on a market day (Saturday mornings on Place d’Armes and also over on Place Crèvecoeur), you can soak up the atmosphere of a CLASSIC FRENCH MARKET and admire some historical sights all at the same time (we like the Rodin statue, the Charles-de-Gaulle statue, the stunning Grand Théâtre, the climbable lighthouse and the 13th century watchtower). Finally, counter the hustle and bustle of your shopping morning with a relaxed meal at a special restaurant like ‘Histoire Ancienne’ – the French love a long (liquid) lunch, so why now join them!

When you’re all retailed out, your Calais accommodation is the perfect place to throw your bags down, put your feet up and relax on your shopping break in Calais. There’s a sauna in your bathroom (yes, you read that right!), a complimentary half bottle of champagne to enjoy, and ‒ with one of the best French breakfasts you’ve ever had ‒ the boutiquey B&B manages to strike the perfect balance of luxury-yet-relaxed all at the same time.

Just one last thing… if you find yourself wondering what the name of your Calais accommodation ‘Cercle de Malines’ means, well, ‘Malines’ is a certain type of Northern France lace, reflecting the fact that Stéphanie, your super-welcoming host, is the granddaughter of a lace designer and will share her family anecdotes… Weave (sorry!) got you intrigued now, haven’t we!
